Grand Opening of the New Multipurpose Complex

DSC 0881The Adventist University of Africa (AUA) was pleased to have officially opened and dedicated the Lindsay Thomas Jr., PhD Multipurpose Complex on Sunday 3 November 2019.

DSC 0910The grand occasion was honoured by the Cabinet Secretary (CS) of the Ministry of Education in Kenya, Prof. George Magoha, CBS. The Cabinet Secretary read a complimentary speech on behalf of the President of the Republic of Kenya, His Excellency Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta. The CS commended ¬the Seventh-day Adventist Church for being strong on education and health. Of worthy mention, was the fact that AUA trains students from across countries of Sub Saharan Africa with current student representation from 30 out of the 46 African countries.

Prof. Magoha emphasized quality, innovative programmes that reach the highest standard of excellence in education as well as practical relevance. He also stressed the need for quality programs and assertive progress in Information and Artificial Intelligence. He urged the University to enhance its diversity in programmes so as to avoid duplication of programmes across the universities in Kenya.

The Chancellor, Dr Blasious Ruguri commended AUA on persisting in planning for the future needs of the campus and community. Vice-Chancellor Dr Delbert Baker extended his deep appreciation to the kind and generous donors from Africa, America and around the world. He went on to affirm the fact that while the basic facility cost is covered there is still much that interested supporters and friends can contribute to. The overall theme was thankfulness for this beautiful and stellar complex that is truly multipurpose and ecologically Green.

Among the donors of the Complex was Dr. Evelyan Thomas who contributed the anchor gift in honour of the late Dr. Lindsay Thomas who was an educator, lay pastor and long-time contributor to African advancement and development. Dr. Evelyan Thomas was represented at the Dedication by Earl Adouis and Giles McGill, both friends of Dr. Lindsay who are committed to continuing his work in Africa.

Among others, other donors mentioned were Hon. Simeon Nyachae from Kenya, Dr Adedeji Adeleke of Nigeria, the AUA Strategic Development Partners (SDP), the General Conference of SDA, East-Central Africa Division, Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division, and West-Central Africa Division. A more complete list of the many Donors will be shared later.

DSC 0979 Other dignitaries present during the event were Guillermo Biaggi, General Vice President of the General Conference, Ray Wahlen, Undertreasurer at the General Conference, the Kajiado County Governor Hon. Joseph Ole Lenku, leaders from across the East-Central Africa Division. Also present were AUA faculty, staff, students and graduates of AUA.

A well-received inaugural concert featuring world-renowned singer and Pastor, Dr. Wintley Phipps filled the state-of-the-art Simeon Nyachae Auditorium. The 1,200 seat auditorium was filled to capacity as rendition after rendition was performed by the renowned international vocal artist. Ecstatic concert attendees made remarks like, “the music was superb, outstanding. The acoustics, visuals and overall experience were stunning. A real contribution to the Nairobi and wider communities. I was truly blessed. We should have more of these events in this magnificent facility.”

DSC 1094Other than a 1,200 seat acoustic auditorium, the monumental Complex contains eight fully equipped technological classrooms with break-out capacity for groups, an indoor and outdoor amphitheatre, social veranda terraces with beautiful views of the surrounding hills and environs, administrative offices, a spacious cafeteria, fitness centre, banking services, among other facilities. Crowing the Complex in the rear is a commodious and beautifully manicured Graduation and Meeting Square that boasts the 54 flags of Africa. On the visionary ecological side, the facility features ecological Green solar energy panels, advanced water harvesting ability, tree planting emphasis and a long-term maintenance plan.

The several facilities provided in the edifice are to enhance the academic scholarship and quality research by both faculty and students. Undergirding all the external construction is a comprehensive and reliable Information and Communication Technology (ICT) fibre optic system. This is to support learning through online education, video conferencing and web-based education on campus and partner institutions.

The building has the capacity to meet the needs of AUA and the Advent Hill community, in which the East-Central Africa Division (ECD) stands, both now and into the future. In addition, the building provides fine facilities that an organization can use for large and commodious meetings of a specific or general nature.

The Lindsay Thomas, Jr., PhD, Multipurpose Complex Ground Breaking was on 23 November 2016, a little under three years ago. The architectural masterpiece was developed by Arch. Charles Misiani of Achera Architects Ltd in collaboration with Veksons Ltd Construction and the AUA administration.

DSC 1368Indeed, as Pr. Phipps sang on the Sabbath during the weekend, “To God Be The Glory” for the things He has done.
