The Adventist University of Africa holds a Research Conference on Ethics

 Global Ethics conference speaker

The Adventist University of Africa, Kenya, recently held its maiden international research conference with the theme “The Global Ethics Crisis: Implications for the Adventist Church in Africa.”  It was held from September 4 – 6, 2014 on the University’s main campus in Nairobi.

The conference attracted over 120 participants from sister universities and institutions across Africa.  Approximately 30 theological and empirical papers as well as case studies about ethical issues facing the Church and members in Africa were presented and discussed. Keynote speakers included Dr. Stephen Bauer, who presented a paper challenging the way we understand ethics in the 10 commandments, Dr. Larry Lichtenwalter, challenged the participants to consider their character as what they are when they are alone, and Dr. Zacchaeus Mathema, who shared his concern that as Africa has moved away from taboos that govern behavior, they have lost their moral compass and entered into an age where anything goes.

As part of the closing ceremony, conference participants drafted an Ethics Statement and pledged their commitment to moral character and actions.
