Practical Information

Visa and Passport

Most delegates need a visa, which in most cases can be received on arrival at the airport for $50. Visit this page to be familiar with the Kenya visa requirements.

You also need a passport that’s valid for 3 months from the moment of entry. To apply for a Single entry visa, Transit visa or Courtesy visa to Kenya and pay securely using your VISA card or Mastercard, visit eVisa

Getting in and out

Unless one is coming from Tanzania or Uganda, flying is about the only way to enter Kenya. Most tourists come in through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, but some international charter companies also use Moi International Airport in Mombasa. Here’s a list of airlines that fly to Kenya as well as air connections to Kenya. The major Kenyan airline is Kenya Airways.

No departure or airport tax is payable for both international and domestic flights. There are duty-free shops at international airports, but purchases are only made in convertible currencies. Customs officials may require the inspection of outgoing baggage. All baggage is weighed and subjected to X-ray inspection before being loaded. Please consult your travel agent for other formalities.

Getting Around

There is a nation-wide network of buses and matatus, city-wide taxis (including Uber and Taxify) and a limited railway (especially Nairobi-Mombasa). Hiring a car in Kenya is fairly expensive with lots of small print, but sometimes the only option.

Driving

Short-stay drivers require only their own valid driving licences, which have to be endorsed at the Road Transport Office in Nairobi, either at Income Tax House (Ngong Road) or Times Tower (Haile Selassie Avenue). An international driving licence is the most convenient. Your travel agent can organize a “carnet de passage” for you, which covers, amongst other things, international driving licence and insurance.

Driving is on the left, and drivers approaching from the right at roundabouts are given priority. Fuel is sold in litres, and distances are measured and marked in kilometres.

Time Zone

Kenya’s time zone is +3 GMT, meaning 3 hours later than London.

Weather

Kenya is at the equator and has a tropical climate and thus generally warm. Each year, there are mainly two rainy seasons and two dry seasons. The dry periods are Jan-Feb and Jul-Aug.

Money, Banks and ATMs

The currency in Kenya is the Kenya shilling (KSHS) or KES. Most major currencies are accepted and one can convert to Kenya shillings at the nearest bank or Forex Bureau.

ATM machines are available 24 hrs at all major banks in every city and county, and one can use their ATM debit card on Kenya's ATM machines to withdraw money from the bank at home. Depending on the bank and or machine one uses, one may incur a small international transaction fee when one uses your ATM debit/credit card.

Banks are generally open between 9.00 am and 3.00 pm, Monday through Friday, and between 9.00 am and 11.00 am on the first and last Saturday of the month. Branches of banks at the Jomo Kenyatta and Moi International Airports often run 24-hour services.

Offices in Kenya are generally open between 8.00 am and 5.00 pm, Monday through Friday.

The electricity supply in Kenya is 220/240 volts 50Hz. Sockets are usually three pins square. It is advisable to ensure that appliances such as videos or battery chargers operating on other voltage have a built-in adapter. It is recommended that you bring your own adapter.
