Pan African Family Life Ministries Conference

Attendees at the Pan African Family Life ConferenceThe first of its kind, the Adventist Pan-African Conference on Dynamic Family Relations was held in Africa at the Adventist University of Africa. The Family Life Ministries of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists together with the three African Divisions facilitated this needed and timely conference. The Family Life Ministries leaders from East-Central Africa, Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division and West-Central Africa Divisions and their respective Unions were in attendance.

Elaine and Willie Oliver, the Family Life Ministries directors at the General ConferenceThe purpose of the conference was to take a closer look at several family practices in culturally entrenched in Africa to make sure they are biblically sound or in need of seeking greater realignment with the Bible. Marriage and family practices under discussion included polygamy, traditional African religions, dual-career marriages, traditional versus civil marriage, challenges of divorce, the high c

ost of bride price (lobola), and balanced leadership in marriage.

“This conference is important because culture is so important to all of us regardless of where we’re from,” said Elaine Oliver, the GC Family Life Ministries director in partnership with Willie Oliver. “Our culture usually drives what we do, how we behave, how we make decisions, how we live our lives. Specifically, we’re dealing with marriage and family so this conversation that we’re having here these few days are critical because most importantly we need our culture to be the culture of Christianity.”

FLMRCPapu“The Adventist Christian Community guided by the biblical principles is expected to discard those influences that are contrary to the Bible while embracing those that are affirmed in the Bible.” Said Dr Jongimpi Papu, one of the plenary speakers on traditional African Religions and its impact on family relations, and the high cost of Lobola (bride price).

AWS Scholarship Deadline

AUA Worthy Student Scholarship

AUA recognizes that there are worthy students from different areas in Africa who, despite their will and a strong commitment to learning, do not have adequate financial resources to complete a graduate program on their own and, therefore, need financial support to reach their educational goals.

In response to this need, AUA has developed a scholarship fund from the generous support of donors.

Apply for the AWS Scholarship before 31st January.
