The proliferative nature of knowledge makes academic libraries evolvers in search of new knowledge in order to keep abreast on the current trends of Library and Information Services. This requires support and input from friends and other stake holders. It is on this basis that Judith Thomas Library upholds on to the saying that “no man lives as an island.”

You are therefore invited to be a FRIEND of the library and make a donation to help the library in achieving its mission of providing comprehensive information resources and services.



Online Public Access Catalog is the online database of all the materials available in Judith Thomas Library. Users may search the catalog by titles, authors, or subjects to locate books and other published materials relevant for their research.

Our Services


Circulation: This is the main public service point where all library users must report to for any queries regarding the use of the library resources, from which they are given more directions on where go and what to do. Books are also loaned out and returned to the section.

General: This section contains books and resources that can be borrowed out by patrons for a stipulated period of time. They are arranged in accordance to the Library of Congress classification scheme.

Reference: Contains reference material whose usage is restricted to within the library premises. On special occasions, reference material can be given to patrons for overnight usage.

Periodicals: Contain publications and articles that are released on a regular basis regarding various topics of interest to the learners within the university.

Reserve: This section contains books and other resources whose demand is high, but has a limited number. As such, usage is limited to the library, and for a short period of time.

Africana: A section in the library that contains books whose main subject content has emphasis on Africa.

Media Center: A section in the library where users can access audio-visual learning material.

User Services: A Library section that offers assistance, advice, and instructions to library patrons.

Acquisition: The department in the library responsible for the selection and purchase of learning materials or resources.

Cataloguing: The section that is responsible for making a register of all bibliographic items found in the library. JTL uses KOHA, an integrated library management system to manage its resources.

Classification: A section in the library that classifies books according to their subject content using letters and numbers assigned by the Library of Congress team, whose classification scheme JTL conforms to. This ensures books of the same subject are shelved together, and therefore, easy to find.

Emerald Group Publishing Ltd : A global publisher that manages a portfolio of over 290 journals and 2000 book titles in areas of Business, Management, Marketing, Information Sciences, and Computer Science.

JSTOR : An archive of thousands of academic journals in fields of Education, History, humanities, social sciences, Art and Art History, Language and Literature among others.

World Bank e-library : A collection of online books, reports/working papers, journals and other documents of social and economic development provided by the World Bank.

OECD : Offers periodicals, Books, Working Papers and statistics in areas of Economics, Public Policy, Social Sciences and Environmental issues.

Springer : Offers access to journals, books and publications in Public Health, Biomedical Sciences, Business and Management, Computer Science, Life Sciences, Medicine, Philosophy, Computer Science, and Education & Language.

Annual Reviews : Publications in Economics, Biomedical, Physical and Social Sciences.

Project MUSE : Provides access to full-text journals and ebooks in areas of Religion, Philosophy, Education, Technology, Medicine and Health, Social Sciences among others.

Gale Databases Offers content in Health, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science and Technology.

African Digital Library : Provides digitized full text resources to learners in Africa, thereby contributing to the revitalization of education and lifelong learning on the continent and alleviation of digital divide.

African Journal Archive : A digitization project of full-text journal articles published in Africa, in the Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, providing access to a multi-disciplinary, multi-country digital archive of Africa’s research and cultural heritage contained in its journal literature.

Bible Gateway : Enables the search the Bible in variuous languages including English, German, Swedish, Latin, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Tagalog, and Norwegian.

Bible Commentaries Online : Offers explanations and interpretations of Bible verses using an online Bible commentary.

New Testament Gateway : A web directory of internet resources on the New Testament.

American Religion Data Archives : The ARDA provides free access to the most authoritative religion statistics, data and church membership reports from around the world

Christian Classics Ethereal Library : This is a library that aims at building up the church by making classic Christian writings available and promoting their use.

Research in Ministry : RIM indexes and Abstracts projects and theses of Doctor of Ministry (DMin), Doctor of Missiology (DMiss) and Doctor of Educational Ministry (DEdMin) from schools accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS)

Project Wittenberg : This is an electronic text initiative which converts to electronic form the writings of Martin Luther and Other Lutherans.

ERIC (Education Resource Information Center) : ERIC is the world's largest digital library of education literature. It contains mostly peer-reviewed education journals articles and other education-related materials.

Internet Public Library, ipl2
Ipl2 is a public service organization and a learning/teaching environment. To date, thousands of students and volunteer library and information science professionals have been involved in answering reference questions for our Ask an ipl2 Librarian service and in designing, building, creating and maintaining the ipl2's collections. It is through the efforts of these students and volunteers that the ipl2 continues to thrive to this day.

PubMed : Comprises more than 22 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Citations may include links to full-text content from PubMed Central and publisher web sites.

General - Books
Online Books : A listing over 1 million free books on the Web.

Open Text Books : A Registry of textbooks and related materials free for anyone to use, reuse and redistribute. It is an initiative designed to promote direct teaching/learning opportunities. You can participate as a student by signing up for a course or as a teacher by designing and running a course.

Project Gutenberg : Enables users to download free eBooks for kindle, android, ipad, nook, epub or read online without any registration requirement.

General Newspapers
World Newspaper Archive : A newspaper Archive From 1607 to Present.

General Periodicals
Directory of Open Access Journals, DOAJ A website with categorized, searchable links to free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals.

Electronic Journals Library : Offers a list of full text journals categorized by subject and by title.

Global Ethics Library : Offers access to a large number of resources on ethics, especially through its leading global digital ethics library and facilitates collaborative web-based research, conferences, online publishing and information sharing.

Highwire Articles and Abstracts : HighWire Press is the largest archive of free full-text science journals and articles on Earth as of 5/15/13!

Open J-Gate : Open Access Initiative is a new paradigm in scholarly publishing whose aim is to promote models that ensure free and unrestricted access to scholarly & research journals. It offers seamless access millions of journals.

Global Missiology : Global Missiology is a quarterly publication of contributions from international researchers, practitioners and scholars who have a global perspective.

Welcome to Judith Thomas Library portal. The library is Ultra-Modern with a welcoming environment for students, faculty and staff. The library has adequate space with attractive furnishing. The ever-green and health plants placed strategically in the library makes it beautifully inviting to the users as they interact with knowledge. The library is ICT-compliant because information resources are managed by an integrated library management system. The library’s portal is a gateway to our resources and services and I encourage you to visit and explore it more often and make optimal use of it.   • Introduction

Judith Thomas Library (JTL) is relatively a new library that was officially opened on 28th May 2012. The library is named after Judith Thomas, who gave seed money for the construction of the building. It conforms to the Standards and Guidelines for University Libraries issued by Kenya’s Commission of Higher Education now called Commission for University Education. It has a relevant collection of books, journals and multimedia resources that will enhance your research and study. The library provides a reading area, reference services, research materials and other library services to the students, faculty, and staff under a very welcoming and conducive atmosphere. The services are also extended to workers in other Advent-hill institutions.
The library houses central services such as circulation, selection and acquisitions of library resources, cataloguing and classification, media Centre, and E.G. White research centre. The library has a stock of over 15,000 inclusive of books, periodicals and other non-print materials. The stock is divided into; general circulation and reference materials. Books are classified using the Library of Congress Classification Scheme. The library uses an integrated library management system called, KOHA.
